Remembering our Beautiful Elder Doris Fox
Musqueam Elder Doris Fox was a founding member of the West Coast LEAF Indigenous Advisory Circle and strived to mentor our organization to ground our approach and work in Musqueam ways. This often meant coming to all our work with a deep love, and a good heart and good mind. A very generous person, she offered her time, insight, art teaching and love to all of us at West Coast LEAF.
Elder Doris worked as a life coach, spiritual advisor, and healer using traditional methods taught to her by her Elders and other Indigenous healers. Her impact on her homelands was vast. She sat on several advisory boards, committees, Elders Circles, and worked at several health clinics.
She also taught traditional arts and crafts that were taught to her by her Elders and was an artist and clothing designer. During her classes, she would ensure that the students know about the history, traditions, values, and beliefs behind the ancient knowledge that she shared. Doris also shared her knowledge of intellectual property and the importance of artists knowing how to protect themselves and their work.
Her legacy will continue to shape and guide West Coast LEAF for many years to come.
