The BC Legislature returns on October 6, and we need to make sure the BC government hears us loud and clear: Repeal the Name Change Ban!

Every year, hundreds of British Columbians wait anxiously to receive a name that represents who they are, keeps them safe, and upholds their autonomy.

But under the recent changes to the Name Act, the BC government has put up huge barriers for people needing to change their names, especially trans people, sex workers, Indigenous people reclaiming their names, and survivors of violence.

On October 8, we’re flooding the attorney general’s phone lines to demand a repeal of the name change ban. We want you to join us!

The name change ban interferes with:

  • the right for survivors of gender-based violence to receive legal name changes for their safety.
  • the human rights of transgender people to use their chosen names.
  • UNDRIP and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s requirement that governments enable residential school survivors and their families to reclaim Indigenous names.
