Thank you to all our sponsors, in-kind donors, volunteers and over 760 guests who helped make this event a tremendous success. The 23rd Annual Equality Breakfast held on March 19, 2010 was one of our most successful yet, selling out for the third year in a row and raising almost $50,000 to support important equality-related projects, litigation development, legal rights education workshops, and family law research.
2010 Equality Breakfast photos are here. Thanks to Lia Haleem for the photos!
This year, West Coast LEAF was thrilled to welcome a Nobel Peace Prize winner as the keynote speaker at the annual Equality Breakfast. Jody Williams and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. Williams has been an advocate of freedom, self-determination, and human and civil rights since her protests of the Vietnam War.
In January 2006, Williams and four sister Laureates established the Nobel Women’s Initiative. Its mission is to use the prestige and access afforded by the Nobel Prize to spotlight and promote efforts of women’s rights activists, researchers and organizations working to advance peace, justice and equality for women. “What does it take to change the world? It takes the work of organizations like West Coast LEAF, and all of you who are supporting the work of West Coast LEAF.” - Jody Williams
"I had the pleasure of meeting Jody Williams shortly after her Nobel win when, as Consul General for Canada, I was involved in a series of fundraising concerts for the anti-landmines campaign in California in 1999. Just recently, I saw her again at the Vancouver Peace Summit with the Dalai Lama. She is just the same as ever - and as passionate about her cause as ever. The Nobel is a great distinction, but it also imposes a burden in the sense that one cannot simply walk away from the activities that led to the recognition. Jody Williams does credit to the award and continues to make a difference wherever she can." - Rt Honorable Kim Campbell
